Crystal Pond's New Inhabitants

4/10/05
While the town is busy with town caucus's and zoning board rules, Crystal Pond is being taken over by two new inhabitants.
A pair of beavers have moved into the neighborhood. They are busily setting up their new home and damming up the stream leading from the pond. They have built three dams that can be easily seen. That is, 3 so far!! While being creatures of nature and God - they are also very destructive. What does this mean for Crystal Pond? What does it mean for the citizens living around Crystal Pond? I guess we will all find out.

While they are busy building their dams - they are creating "pools" of water throughout the wooded area. While someone deliberately cut open and built a stream from the pond in the late spring - summer of 2004 - and therefore started flooding the woods intentionally, that is what brought them here from somewhere else. Why someone wants to flood the woods I don't understand. But this could very well spell trouble if the water starts backing up into folks backyards or even up onto the access roadway to the small beach area of the pond. Follow our continuing story as we see what our little friends do.

They have added more branches to block off the stream leading out of Crystal Pond and have reduced the stream to a slow dribble. Many trees in the area show signs of where they have been chewed by them in an effort to bring them down and use them in their dam or home building. Stagnant water pools are forming in various areas of the woods - a wonderful breeding ground for mosquitoes that could very well be carrying any type of disease - unhealthy for humans and local animals. But I can not blame the beavers for that one - after all - if someone had not torn open a stream from the pond - the water would not be dumping uncontrolled into the woods and turning it into a swamp to begin with.

Laying about are many smaller branches with the bark stripped from them. There are 4 or 5 small tree trunks or thicker branches now floating around the edge of the pond in the area they have blocked the stream off.

Today someone tore down the dam built by the beavers at the mouth of the stream. We do not know who did this, just that they were driving a red pick-up truck. We did not get pics of the stream running at full flow once the dam was down. Should have done it. Meanwhile the water from the pond was flowing fully and freely overflowing the sides of the stream and continuing on to dump into the woods creating a big messy swamp area along the side of the stream bed and right into the woods.

Beavers - 1 / People - 0
Sometime during the night the beavers came back and started rebuilding their dam. So much for interference by those pesky humans!! We have pics here showing that the beavers just took a multitude of the branches and debris that the humans pulled out and left behind, and put them right back into place - thereby - damming up the stream again!! While they have not used all the debris and branches the humans pulled out of their original dam - I am sure they will - and very quickly too! It's going to be interesting to see who is going to win this little contest!!

Humans came back and tore up the dams again!! But I'll bet I have pics of new dams by tomorrow morning! The beavers have already rebuilt their dam once - why the humans think they won't rebuild it again is mystifying. And to make things easier for the beavers they are not even taking the debris away - they just drag it out of the stream and pile it on the side of the stream bed - all very handy for the beavers to come and pull it all back in and pack it down and rebuild their dam with!! They don't even have to work for new building materials - everything they need is within a foot or two of where they need to repack it and dam up the stream again.

Needless to say - when the dam is torn out - the water starts flooding not only the stream bed the humans built - but overflows into the piles of straw they have running along the sides of the stream bed. And pulling down the black tarp they have running along the side of the stream bed. The straw is growing mushy and moldy - the black tarp is knocked over in several areas and the fast flowing water is leaving the stream boundaries. All creating a mushy mess - and starting to get an odor. Who is fooling who? I wonder!

It appears our little friends may be gone. Checking the stream this afternoon there was a lot of debris blocking up the opening, but it was not packed in the way they did it. It appears that the flow of the stream pulled in loose twigs, branches and small tree trunks that had been floating along the edge of the pond and clogged the opening of the stream. Nothing at all like their type of work. Maybe they are still around but got scared into hiding by the humans destroying their dam. We will watch and see what happens in the days ahead.

5/12/05
It is apparent the beavers are no longer in the area. There have been no signs of them rebuilding their dams, or housing in the area. While all around the stream mouth piles of debris have been pulled from the mouth of the stream and left scattered haphazardly around the area.
